SPOTLIGHT ON.. ![]() PETER MILNE
With 25 years of teaching experience behind me, I have always had a passion to make a difference to how children, and school communities in general, understand the importance of living in a more sustainable way of life and why it is so crucial to their futures. This led me to form my own company that specialises in cross-curricular, whole school workshops and training in ESD.
Teaching brings a lot of very important skills to the role of a consultant/trainer. In particular, the ability to communicate confidently and clearly to a range of audiences, organisational and logistical skills and, most importantly, the understanding of how schools work and what the staff and students' particular needs are.
The market is rapidly expanding and I see a greater focus on the quality and delivery of diverse curricula which has come from a more effective monitoring and evaluation process. The challenges are the recruitment and retention of quality teachers/management and the greater focus schools need to have on relevant and up to date local and global issues which include education for sustainable development.
Similar to the last answer, but in addition, a long term vision for the types of schools that are being developed; not just to quality of what they offer in the curriculum and how it is taught, but also on the sustainable design principles of the school building itself.
